rest in peace, mrs elizabeth choy.
heh i remember being scared stiff of her in primary school, because we were always told what a heroine she was. whenever she arrived at school, there'd be an elizabeth-choy buzz in the atmosphere. no one hunched. no one ran. no one yelled. we were all perfect polka-dotted school girls.
then once in P5 she was telling her stories in the school library, and i sat down to listen. then i became even more scared of her because there was nothing in the world she's never done before. she's been tortured by the japanese bastards. she's been in politics. she's been a teacher. she's been knighted by princes and princesses and dukes and duchesses and kings and queens. hell she was almighty.
then in secondary school, i went to stef bay's pre-war, the-floor-is-going-to-fall-through, no-running-water-go-dig-a-well house. and then i became downright terrified of her, because the walls were adorned with pictures of her being knighted by the aforementioned royalties(i distinctly remember something about a jade chicken). after double-confirming that her grandmother wasn't home, we started playing war in the house ("the japanese are coming! the japanese are coming!"), until we realised she was on the way home, then we darted out onto a cab and headed to town.
there's no point in this lah i'm just trying to show off that i knew an important person haha.
oooh i remember i bought her book and she autographed it!
neh nee neh nee boo boo.
no i'm kidding. rest in peace mrs choy.
it was a life well lived, and i can only hope mine will be half as fulfilling.
